3 1/2 - 4 yr old:  Introduction To Music (Beginners)

This class meets Fridays from 3:45pm to 4:35pm, September 23rd to December 16, 2011, 134 Henry St. NYC, NY, Lower East Side of Manhattan.  This class is $360 for a 12 week session.

kidsThis 12 week class is designed as a general introduction to music making and musical appreciation.  Children will explore different musical cultures, make their own instruments, learn to play music together and introduced to the basic tools of music making. Percussion instruments are used as the main instruments for learning, but many other instruments are introduced and explored. We start with drums because they are great for motor skills and coordination and allow for instant satisfaction. From day one, children can make interesting sounds and dive into the rules of performing together. Our hands-on approach will focus on playing, movement, composition, improvisation, and listening as ways to amplify children’s creativity and imagination. Children are encouraged to become active and sensitive audience members. Classes are held in a unique environment of a professional music studio with access to many instruments, recording equipment, and a live sound system. Uniquely talented guest musicians are frequently invited to meet and work with the class. This class is a creative and playful approach into the language of music that will ignite a lifetime of learning.

5 - 6yr old:  Ukulele/Percussion Class (Beginners)

This class meets Tuesdays from 3:45 to 4:35pm, September 23rd to December 16th, 2011, 134 Henry St., Lower East Side of Manhattan.  This class is $360 for a 12 week session.

maxChildren will focus on learning how to play different percussion instruments and introduced to the ukulele where they will learn a repetoire of simple ukulele arrangements.  They will develop an understanding of melody building, song structure, composition and gain a deeper  understanding of music fundamentals. Children will be supported as they compose their own pieces and  play them as an ensemble and/or as soloists, following a conductor and sometimes accompanied by special guests.

The concept of “practicing an instrument” is introduced and encouraged.  Each child is required to purchase a ukulele in order to improve their skills and entertain friends and family! The idea of “performing” will gain more importance.  The class will take field trips outside of the classroom setting to explore the vibrant and varied musical offerings of New York City.

Classes are held in a “real” rehearsal studio, a music room filled with classical percussion instruments and other unique instruments from around the world. Special guest artists will teach throughout the semester.

This very hands-on class will inspire your child to continue the path into the musical universe, getting more serious about it without losing the playfulness and fun that is inherent to music.
